Hotaru Dori Firefly Walk | 湯郷温泉 ホタル水路
Fireflies (hotaru) are revered throughout Japanese culture as living symbols of pure water, pristine ecosystems, and the ephemeral beauty of early summer. Along the historic cobblestone stretch of Hotaru Dori (ほたる通り) and the gently flowing Otani River in Yunogo Onsen, visitors can witness one of northern Okayama’s most magical seasonal wildlife encounters.
From late May through mid-June, hundreds of wild Genji-botaru (源氏蛍) and smaller Heike-botaru (平家蛍) emerge from the riverbank moss and clean freshwater pebbles. As night settles over the valley, the riverbanks light up with thousands of floating, rhythmic greenish-gold bioluminescent embers dancing between the bamboo fronds and stone lanterns.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: Because fireflies require immaculate water clarity and absence of artificial light to breed, the Yunogo Onsen community takes tremendous collective pride in protecting the river basin year-round without synthetic runoff. The best viewing conditions are warm, humid, windless nights between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Strolling down Hotaru Dori in a light summer yukata after soaking at Daikokuya is countryside tranquility at its finest.
