Kyoto Kyukyodo Incense | 京都 鳩居堂 お香・和紙
Originally founded in 1663 as a medicinal apothecary before being appointed imperial purveyor of court incense by Emperor Reigen, Kyoto Kyukyodo (京都 鳩居堂) has preserved the refined sensory arts of traditional Japanese stationery for over 360 years.
Located along historic Teramachi-dori, Kyukyodo offers traditional natural incense blended according to secretive Edo-period imperial court formulas, alongside pure animal-hair calligraphy brushes (*fude*), solid ink sticks (*sumi*), and thousands of varieties of handmade mulberry washi paper.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: The moment you step through Kyukyodo’s doorway, the calming scent of aged sandalwood, agarwood, and cinnamon welcomes you. Their seasonal floral letter sets and fragrant pressed incense sachets make the most exquisite, authentic Japanese souvenirs imaginable.
