Aoshima Cat Island | 青島(愛媛 猫の楽園島)
Measuring just 1.6 kilometers in circumference in the blue waters of the Iyo Sea, Aoshima (青島) is internationally celebrated as Japan’s definitive ‘Cat Island,’ where over 100 friendly felines roam free across sunlit fishing piers and quiet stone lanes.
Originally introduced decades ago by local fishermen to control mice on silkworm and sardine boats, the cats multiplied peacefully and now form a tight-knit community cared for by dedicated island residents and feline welfare organizations.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: Aoshima is completely peaceful—there are no hotels, no restaurants, and no cars on the island. Sitting on the warm concrete pier listening to the gentle inland sea waves while surrounded by ten purring tabby cats is the ultimate form of animal therapy.
