Miyamoto Unosuke Taiko | 宮本卯之助商店 浅草太鼓工房
Founded in 1861 in the historic Edo entertainment district of Asakusa, Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten (宮本卯之助商店) is Japan’s premier master builder of traditional festival **Wadaiko (和太鼓)** drums and sacred Shinto portable shrines (*Mikoshi*).
Master woodturners hollow out massive single logs of aged Japanese zelkova (*Keyaki*) before stretching raw bullhide skins with hydraulic jacks and pounding hand-forged black iron studs into the body, tuning the drum to produce a thunderous, soul-shaking acoustic resonance.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: Striking a massive Miyamoto Unosuke festival drum is an electrifying physical sensation—the deep sub-bass vibrations bypass your ears and resonate directly inside your chest cavity. It is the rhythmic heartbeat of traditional Japan.
