Arashiyama Monkey Park | 嵐山モンキーパークいわたやま
Perched 160 meters above sea level on the forested slopes of Mount Iwatayama in western Kyoto, the Arashiyama Monkey Park (嵐山モンキーパークいわたやま) is home to a wild, naturally free-ranging troop of over 120 Japanese macaques (*Macaca fuscata*).
Following a scenic 20-minute hiking trail through towering cedar groves and wild cherry trees, visitors reach the panoramic summit plateau where friendly monkeys play peacefully, groom in the sun, and forage against an unforgettable birds-eye view of Kyoto’s skyline.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: What makes Iwatayama truly wonderful is that the animals are 100% uncaged—they roam completely free on the mountain. Standing on the summit deck handing crisp apple slices to a mother monkey with her baby clinging to her chest is an unforgettable Kyoto memory.
