Bitchu Matsuyama Cat Lord | 備中松山城 猫城主
The Rescued Feline Sovereign of Japan’s Mountain Castle in the Sky
Perched atop Mount Gagyu at 430 meters elevation, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (備中松山城) is the only mountaintop castle (Yamajiro) in Japan retaining an original surviving Edo-period wooden keep. In autumn and winter, it famously floats above a dramatic “sea of clouds” (Unkai).
The Legend of Sanjuro (さんじゅーろー):
- The Sovereign Cat: After torrential rains in 2018, an orange-and-white stray cat wandered into the castle grounds. Loved by groundskeepers and visitors, he was officially appointed the Honorary Castle Lord (Neko-Jōshu).
- Daily Castle Patrols: Lord Sanjuro conducts daily inspection patrols along the historic stone ramparts and greets mountaineering visitors at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
- Viral Icon: He single-handedly revitalized tourism to Takahashi City, becoming an international ambassador for animal rescue and heritage preservation.
