Bizen Ware Pottery Kilns | 備前焼 登り窯工房
1,000 Years of Unglazed Wood-Fired Stoneware Heritage
Imbe in eastern Okayama is the birthplace of Bizen-yaki (備前焼), one of Japan’s prestigious Six Ancient Kilns (Nihon Rokkoyō). Uniquely in the world of high pottery, Bizen ware uses zero chemical glazes and zero artificial colors.
Natural Magic of the Wood Fire:
- Two-Week Firings: Pieces are loaded into multi-chambered climbing kilns (Noborigama) and fired continuously with red pine firewood (Akamatsu) for up to two weeks at 1,200°C.
- Flame Markings (Yohen 窯変): The resulting surface designs—including fiery straw marks (Hidasuki) and metallic sesame ash (Goma)—are created strictly by wood embers and oxygen currents.
- Living Pottery: Bizen ware’s micro-porous texture softens the astringency of sake, creates exceptionally creamy beer foam, and keeps cut flowers fresh longer in ceramic vases.
- Hands-On Wheel Lessons: Local ateliers in Imbe offer hands-on ceramic throwing lessons with master potters.
