Sacred Craft of Mulberry Fiber Papermaking Along Pristine Streams

Echizen City in Fukui Prefecture is celebrated as the historic heartland of Echizen Washi (越前和紙). For over 1,500 years, master papermakers have utilized the clear, pure mineral waters of the Okamoto River to transform mulberry bark (Kōzo) and gampi fibers into Japan’s most durable paper.

What to Experience:

  • Udatsu Papermaking Studio (Udatsu Kōgeikan 卯立の工芸館): Watch master artisans perform the mesmerizing fluid rhythm of Nagashi-suki (filtering pulp through fine bamboo screens).
  • Hands-On Paper Crafting: Dip your own bamboo frame (Keta) into the vat to craft bespoke stationery, decorative place cards, and washi lampshades embedded with real autumn leaves.
  • Sacred Paper Goddess Shrine: Visit the ancient Okamoto Shrine, Japan’s only Shinto shrine dedicated exclusively to the deity of papermaking (Kawakami Gozen).
