Kojima Jeans Street | 児島 ジーンズストリート
Celebrated by fashion connoisseurs worldwide as the undisputed birthplace and global capital of artisan Japanese denim, Kojima Jeans Street (児島ジーンズストリート) in southern Kurashiki, Okayama, transforms an entire historic shopping arcade into a denim sanctuary.
Over forty independent boutique ateliers—including legendary brands like Japan Blue, Momotaro, and Big John—showcase raw selvedge denim woven on restored 1950s Toyoda shuttle looms, colored using natural indigo plant dyes (*Aizome*), and sewn with vintage chain-stitch machines.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: Kojima is incredible. Even the vending machines, street crossing signals, and ice cream (indigo sea-salt soft serve) are themed in denim blue. Buying a pair of custom-fitted selvedge jeans hemmed on an original Union Special 43200G machine right in front of you is a bucket-list souvenir.
