Dating back over 1,300 years since its introduction to Japan’s imperial court from Tang Dynasty China, the 13-stringed Koto (箏) is the national zither of Japan, renowned for its crystalline, rippling harmonics that evoke running water and gentle seasonal winds.
Inside historic wooden ateliers near Kyoto’s Imperial Palace, generational luthiers hand-chisel the hollow resonant soundboard from aged Paulownia wood (*Kiri*), carving internal acoustic grooves (*Ayasugi*) before stringing high-tension silk cords across adjustable bridges (*Ji*).
