Shakuhachi Flute Atelier | 伝統和楽器 尺八・篠笛
Acoustic Bamboo Aerophones & Sacred Pentatonic Scales
The Shakuhachi (尺八) is a traditional end-blown bamboo flute rooted in Zen Buddhist meditation (Suizen 吹禅). Crafted from the dense root-end of Madake bamboo, it produces an extraordinarily nuanced microtonal soundscape.
Musical Scales & Characteristics:
- Traditional Scales: Built naturally on pentatonic scales such as the In Senpō (陰旋法) and Hirajōshi (平調子), creating the meditative, atmospheric mood featured on Bru’s Quiet Japan.
- Jinashi vs. Jiari Shakuhachi: Jinashi preserves the raw, unlacquered internal bamboo nodes for deep, organic tones; Jiari utilizes polished urushi paste for acoustic power and concert pitch.
- Shinobue (篠笛): Side-blown bamboo flutes used in village festivals (Matsuri) and ambient folk music.
- Preservation of the Craft: Each flute requires months of curing, burning, and artisanal precision joinery.
