Shamisen & Silk Strings | 三味線製作・絹糸工房
The Resonant Three-String Lute of Kabuki, Folk & Modern Fusion
The Shamisen (三味線) is one of Japan’s most dynamic acoustic instruments. From the fiery percussive slapping of northern Tsugaru-jamisen to the refined lyrical resonance of Kyoto’s Jiuta and Tokyo’s Nagauta, the instrument produces a distinctive buzzy acoustic timber driven by its Sawari mechanism.
Craftsmanship & Components:
- Hardwood Timber Necks: Carved from dense Indian rosewood (Kōki 紅木) or red sandalwood, using traditional three-piece mortise-and-tenon joints (Mitsu-ori).
- Pure Twisted Silk Strings: Hand-wound silk strings coated in natural resin, delivering warm organic overtones that nylon strings cannot replicate.
- Hand-Held Plectrums (Bachi 撥): Carved from dense water buffalo horn or seasoned boxwood, providing crisp percussive attack on the taut membrane.
- Acoustic Scales: Tuning seamlessly between Honchōshi, Niagari, and Sansagari to evoke deep nostalgic rural melancholy.
