Tottori Sand Dunes Reserve | 鳥取砂丘 海岸国立公園
Stretching 16 kilometers along the Sea of Japan and reaching heights of over 45 meters, the Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘) form Japan’s largest and most famous coastal dune system, created over 100,000 years by mountain granite washed down the Sendai River.
Part of the San’in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, visitors can hike the towering ‘Horse’s Back’ dune ridge to witness delicate wind-carved patterns (*fūmon*) shifting across the golden sands before gazing down onto crashing azure ocean waves.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: Standing on top of the dunes in the late afternoon as the sea breeze sculpts endless geometric ripples across the sand is genuinely hypnotic. Just next door is the world’s only museum dedicated exclusively to master sand sculptures (*The Sand Museum*).
