Yame Handmade Washi | 八女手すき和紙(福岡伝統工芸)
Fed by the crystal-clear currents of the Yabe River in southern Fukuoka, Yame Handmade Washi (八女手すき和紙) has been preserved continuously since 1591, celebrated as the oldest handmade papermaking lineage in Kyushu.
Using 100% locally grown mulberry bark (*Kozo*) and natural plant mucilage (*Neri*), artisans dip woven bamboo screens (*Suketa*) into chilled vats with rhythmic, flowing motions, interlacing the long, tough fibers into paper renowned for extraordinary tensile strength and durability spanning centuries.
Bruce’s Lived Experience Note: Yame washi is legendary for its structural toughness—it is traditionally used for sacred Shinto shrine lanterns and ancient sutra preservation. Feeling the raw, organic deckled edge of a freshly dried sheet in the morning sun connects you straight to ancient Japan.
